Top Tips from the Year 6 Grammar Group

Source: valpendleton

Our wonderful Year 6 Grammar Group have some top tips for you on how to write a perfect sentence!

Firstly, they will tell you what a sentence must have:
  • A capital letter to start the first word,
  • A full stop to end the sentence (or a ? or !)
  • A verb (a doing word)
  • A subject (someone or something that is doing the action)
An example sentence is: The cat sat on the mat.

To improve your sentence and make it more exciting, you could use:
  • Adverbs
  • A variety of nouns
  • A fronted adverbial
  • Conjunctions
  • Adjectives
  • A subordinate clause
  • Interesting punctuation, such as; commas, speechmarks, brackets, dashes, a hyphen and a colon or semi-colon
Here is their improved sentence: Before dawn, the chubby cat, who was day dreaming, slouched joyfully onto the rough mat.

St. Clare's Class also had a try at improving my boring sentence. Here is the result:

The cat sat on the mat.
The cat sat daintily on the mat.
The cat sat daintily on the soft mat.
The fluffy cat sat daintily on the soft mat.
The fluffy cat sat daintily on the soft, dirty mat.
As dawn broke, the fluffy cat sat daintily on the soft, dirty mat.
As dawn broke, the fluffy cat, who was exhausted, sat daintily on the soft, dirty mat.
As dawn broke, the fluffy cat, who was exhausted, collapsed onto the soft, dirty mat.

An Ice Palace Description:
Abruptly, I heard a cry. At first I thought it was a person but then I realised it was really a wolf pack. I felt extremely bewildered.

Suddenly I thought, and realised the wolves were coming for me, so I needed to think quickly and quietly. As they appeared in shady figures, I suddenly felt the breeze changing direction, right into a mighty colossal oak tree.

I rapidly stumbled up the tree and the wolves surrounded me knowing that, that was the last straw. It was as cold as my aunty's ice-cream factory and I felt like just clumsily giving up and saying farewell. I started to unravel and thought about falling into the mass of fur and fangs.

Editors' Letter

Firstly, a massive congratulations to our Writer of the Week, Yasmin, and to Rory from last week. They have wowed us with their talent, as has everyone who has submitted their work.

We are now running 'Book of the Week' to share great reads for you to enjoy! This week, we have chosen a lovely book; 'Library Lion' by Michelle Knudsen, a warm-hearted and touching story.

One day, a lion comes to the library and nobody knows what to do. The library has lots of rules- but their certainly aren't any about lions! We don't want to give away too much, but keep your eyes peeled in case you spot it anywhere.

We would recommend this book to everyone and agree that it is definitely worth the read.
